Located at Kingsmere in the Gatineau Hills outside Ottawa, the Farm is the official residence of the speaker of the House of Commons during his or her term of office. As its name suggests, the Farm is a rural property consisting of a renovated farmhouse and five outbuildings surrounded by 1.74 hectares (4 acres) of fields and forests. Built as a pioneer homestead in the mid-19th century, the property was privately acquired by then-prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King in 1927, as part of his country estate. On his death, King bequeathed the Farm, along with the rest of his estate, to the people of Canada. It was Mr. King’s wish that his successors be able to use the Farm to escape the pressures of public life. It has been an official residence since 1955.

Though the Farm is closed to the public, the adjacent Mackenzie King Estate is a significant visitor attraction managed by the NCC, which provides historical tours and interpretation of the restored buildings, gardens and historic ruins.
